Which Was the First American Insurance Company?

The first insurance company to set up shop in the United States was called The Philadelphia Contributorship. It was established in 1735 in Charleston, South Carolina. It was a property insurer which provided fire insurance coverage.

In 1752, the company became a mutual where interestingly enough Benjamin Franklin was one of its group members.
