Get Cheaper Car Insurance By Doing 10 Insane Things

Want to get cheaper car insurance? Here are some insane tips that will help you lower your auto insurance and put more money into your wallet (or purse).

#1 Get Married

If you are a male under 25 years of age you can get a much lower rate (as much as 30 to 40% off) by stating you are married on your auto insurance application. However if you are not married, don’t lie for the discount. Depending on the insurance company, you may have to show proof such as a marriage certificate or provide evidence that your common-law partner lives with you. Keep in mind, your partner may not have the greatest driving record which could increase your premium -thereby negating the discount.

This wedding cost me $65 million but I saved on car insurance.

#2 Buy More Cars

The easiest way to get a discount is if you own more than one car, you should try to insure all of them with the same insurer. This is called a multi-vehicle discount and will save you roughly 5% to 10%. Your insurance company will usually ask you if you have any additional cars at your home anyway, but it’s always good to save money.

#3 Compare Quotes

It isn’t too hard to compare quotes online, what with sites like ours (I know shameless promotion) it’s really easy. But seriously what’s the harm in comparing companies and seeing if you can get cheaper car insurance?

#4 Buy a Home

Insurance companies love to insure things. This is why they want you to not only insure your cars with them but they also want you to insure your home with them. And just to butter you up, they will give you a tasty discount as much as 15% to 20%. I know juicy right? You should look into how much combining your home and auto policy can save you. You can do so by checking out our home insurance page.

#5 Drive a Hybrid Car

Not only do you get preferential parking at stores like Ikea, but having a Hybrid car could also mean you qualify for special discounts at certain insurance companies. You also get the hidden joy that you are helping mother Earth.

#6 Raise Your Deductibles

I know no one wants to pay when they get into an accident and it’s not their fault but increasing your deductibles for your collision and comprehensive coverage has two benefits: (1) you lower your insurance premium by as much as 20% and (2) you are going to drive much safer knowing if you get into an accident (and even if it’s not your fault) your going to be paying a deductible. It’s kind of a self-imposed financial deterrent or just a Jedi mind trick for the middle aged parent of two.

#7 Get an Ugly Car

Although high theft cars are desirable vehicles (because who would want to steal then?) they come with slightly higher rates meaning you pay more in insurance to drive that high end luxury sports car. But if you can afford that high end luxury sports car than you ca probably afford the car insurance. For the rest of us 99%, you’ll be surprised how much the cost difference is just between different model years. A recent example I saw was a 2005 Acura RSX costing more per month than a 2012 Toyota Camry. It was about a $100 difference per month. Value wise, today the RSX is worth less than $10k, while the Camry is almost $30k.

8# Ring the Alarm

Many insurance companies offer a discount if your car has an anti-theft device. This is especially true for motorcycles, however, you will need to show proof either from the dealer or from an authorized dealer that your vehicle or motorcycle has such a device.

#9 Take a Driver’s Ed Course

For young drivers, passing a driver’s education course can knock as much as 15 to 20% of their car insurance premiums. However, the driver’s education discount only lasts for about three years after you have received your full licence -as you should be a good enough driver after three years to qualify for normal rates.

#10 Don’t Buy a Car

The easiest way to get cheaper car insurance is to not buy a car in the first place. Okay I know it’s a cheating and ironic for an insurance website to be telling you not to buy a car but if you have read this far than you are likely having a good laugh – and that’s all I can ask for.
