Since Hurricane Katrina, insurance rates have increased substantially in Louisiana. In fact, in 2005 the average Louisiana auto insurance policy cost $1,076. Now only a few years later, the average premium for a Louisiana driver is $2,577. This is a percentage increase of 139%! Such increases only makes it more important that car insurance buyers do their best to shop for the cheapest price in Louisiana. By making it a yearly habit of doing a comparison of auto insurance prices you can save a bundle on your premiums for life.
Louisiana Car Insurance Coverage Requirements
Louisiana state law prohibits driving with no insurance. All drivers must have the following coverages with up to the minimum amount.
- bodily injury per person is $10,000
- bodily injury per accident is $20,000
- property damage liability is $10,000
Keep in mind these are the minimum requirements by law and may not adequately cover you in the event of accidents. In fact, most insurance providers recommend going above and beyond these levels of coverage as these levels are the bare minimum financial protection if legal action is brought against you.
