Is My Car Insurance Valid If I Drive to Another Country?
If you are a resident of the United States or Canada, you’re car insurance will be considered valid in either country. However, if you drive anywhere else in the world, say Mexico than your insurance will not be valid. To be sure check your declaration form which comes with your auto insurance policy to see which regions you are covered in or give your insurance company a call.
It is important to note that each state in the U.S. and each province in Canada has different minimum liability limits and your insurance company is only on the hook for the minimum liability limit in your state/province or whatever amount you have purchased additionally. So if you are driving from New York where the minimum bodily injury liability limit is $25,000 (and that’s all you have purchased) and you hurt someone driving in Ontario, Canada (where the minimum is $200,000), you will be responsible for making up that difference out of your own pocket.
A good idea if you are travelling across states is to make sure you have enough the minimum liability coverage for the area you are going into as you are putting yourself in a risky financial situation.
