With car insurance rates on the rise again (and let’s not forget the cost of gas) consumers are looking for ways to get more affordable auto insurance. Before you get a car insurance quote from any company it is wise to see if you qualify for any discounts. Keep in mind, each company has different discounts which you may or may not be eligible for. Here we will try to explain some of the more popular auto insurance discounts that most insurance companies should offer -if not look elsewhere.

Multi-Vehicle Discount
By ensuring more than one car with a particular insurance company you can get a discount from usually 5% to 15%. It is a good idea to insure two cars with the same insurer when you have a married couple where both the husband and wife are accident free and have no convictions.

Multi-Line Discount
Some insurance companies provide an additional discount when you buy another “type” of insurance from them along with an auto insurance policy. Most companies will give you a discount when you insure your home along with your car with them.

Good Driver Discount
If you are a good driver meaning that you do not have an accident within the last five years and have no convictions within the last three years, you will not only get a great rate but also get a discount.

Seniors Discount
Almost every insurance company should offer some form of a seniors discount. Their are some conditions such as you should be over either 55 or 65. There is also a variation of this discount called the Retiree Discount in which you must be retired from working and over the age of 65 to be eligible. These discounts usually ranges from 5% to 7%.

Driver Education Discount
This discount applies to those who have passed an approved driver training program. It is important to remember there is usually a time limit on this discount such as two or three years from the date of graduating from a program. The main purpose of this discount is to reduce the rates of new drivers who have gone through a driver training program.

Payment Plan Discount
This is a pretty easy discount to qualify for as you just need to opt into the insurance company’s payment plan. A payment plan is where your insurance company automatically withdraws a portion of your auto insurance premium every month from your bank account or through your credit card.

Anti-Theft Discount
If you have an anti-theft device on your vehicle such as an alarm or an immobilizer you can get an additional discount. Be aware that some insurance companies apply this discount only if you have comprehensive coverage. They do this because comprehensive coverage is the coverage that protects your car from theft. Therefore having an anti-theft device such an alarm system can reduce your chance of your vehicle being stolen and so your rates should reflect that.
